Boss who worked unsafely on shop roof is prosecuted

A boss who worked with a labourer at great heights on top of a fish and chip shop has been prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after the pair narrowly avoided personal injury.
HSE officers were originally alerted to unsafe practices at the shop after reports that wood and tiles had been dropped onto the pavement below. Upon arrival, an inspector discovered that, although there was scaffolding at the front of the property, there was nothing to stop the two men falling from the roof down the back of the property.
The local Magistrates' Court was also told that there was no protective mesh to protect customers in the shop below from being struck by items which could fall from the roof. Consequently the man was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £800 costs for both offences.
HSE inspector Ian Betley said: "Falls from height are a major cause of workplace deaths and injuries in the UK. It's therefore vital that roofers take the risks seriously."
According to the HSE, last year more than 4,000 employees suffered a major injury as a result of a fall from height at work while 12 were killed.
