Prosecution highlights dangers of working from height

The prosecution of a Somerset firm reveals how workers hurt in falls from height may want to seek advice from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.

UK Storage Company (SW) Limited was fined after a construction worker fell three metres while working on a barn conversion.

Mark Clark was helping to renovate his employer's property North Petherton, Bridgwater when the accident occurred last year.

The 55-year-old broke his back, arm and ribs and can no longer work in the construction industry.

Taunton Magistrates Court heard that while some measures had been put in place to prevent such a fall, these were described as inadequate.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Steve Frain said: "Employers need to ensure there is adequate supervision and fall protection in place while renovation activity of this nature is undertaken."

Falls from height remain one of the most serious causes of preventable workplace accidents in the UK.

In 2008/2009, over 4,000 major injuries were caused by falls from height at work, according to the HSE.
