Fine for company that endangered workers with 'homemade harness'

Workers at a Wiltshire firm were needlessly endangered by their employer by using a "homemade harness system", a court has heard.

The employees may have needed advice from an accident at work solicitor had the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) not visited Ashton Farms Limited, of Steeple Ashton, Trowbridge.

Chippenham Magistrates' Court heard that when an inspector visited the farm in October last year, she found two workers installing a roof to an outbuilding without adequate edge protection or nets to prevent them from falling.

Instead, they were using an homemade running line and harness system, which the HSE said would not have prevented a fall.

Ashton Farms was fined a total of £8,000 after pleading guilty to two charges of breaching health and safety regulations.

HSE inspector Annette Walker said: "This type of work poses a risk of serious injury and even death, and Ashton Farms could and should have ensured they had suitable protection in place whilst renovating the barn in Chippenham."

It comes after new statistics revealed that agriculture remains one of the most dangerous industries in the UK.

There were 34 workplace fatalities in the farming sector in 2010/11, a rate of eight per 100,000 workers.
