Cleaning products firm prosecuted after workplace injury

A cleaning products manufacturer has been fined after a worker was injured by a stacker truck. In a case that highlights how manufacturing workers may need to seek advice from a personal injury lawyer in Southampton, Revelholme Marketing Ltd (trading as Unic International) was fined £5,000 after a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation. The employee, who did not wish to be named, suffered a fractured cheekbone, skull injuries and long term vision impairment following the incident in 2009. He was helping to load a lorry using semi-electric stacker truck, which fell onto him when it was pulled over a kerb. The Nottingham-based company was found guilty of breaching health and safety regulations after a three-day trial. HSE inspector Stuart Pilkington said: "Companies need to ensure that the work equipment they use, such as stacker trucks, is suitable for the task, and for the conditions in which it is used." Figures show that manufacturing is more dangerous than others, accounting for 16 per cent of all reportable injuries, though only nine per cent of the British workforce is involved in the industry. Manufacturing also accounts for 56 per cent of reported injuries that involved contact with moving machinery, according to the HSE. Posted by Paul Stevens
