Fast track for small business planning applications 'a must'

Small businesses engaging a property development solicitor to expand their enterprise should be able to fast track their planning applications, the government has been told.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) claims in a new report that companies must be allowed to cut through red tape to help generate economic growth.

A survey from the organisation reveals that more than half of small businesses find planning applications overly complex and two-fifths find the process far too costly.

FSB national chairman John Walker said: "Small firms tend to want to make minor changes that require time consuming and expensive planning applications, when these small alterations can enable them to expand and diversify and so stimulate much needed growth in the economy."

The business group is calling on the government to make the planning system easier, clearer and cheaper for small firms so they can carry out minor building alterations.

It comes as the government is reviewing planning law as part of its localism approach designed to put communities at the heart of decisions.
