Jewson pays out £400k for disability discrimination claim

A man sacked by his employer following a stroke has won almost £400,000 after seeking advice from an employment discrimination claim solicitor. Jonathan Jones was awarded the compensation after he was dismissed by building merchants Jewson. He worked as a branch manager at the firm's site in Cardigan, Wales, before a stroke meant he had to take five months of sick leave. After his doctor advised him to avoid workplace stress, he was dismissed by Jewson as it claimed there was no role suitable. At a Cardiff employment tribunal hearing, the company was ordered to pay £390,870 in compensation to cover backdated wages, interest, penalty payments, pension payments and damages. Although this fell short of the £1 million Mr Jones had wanted, it is the largest payout of its kind in Wales. A Jewson spokeswoman said: "We fell far short of the high standards we set ourselves in this area."
