Retailers calls for action plan to save high streets

Retailers are calling for urgent action to stem the tide of shop closures on Britain's high streets. Some 20 stores a day were closed between January and May 2011, research by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Local Data Company has revealed. Now, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has said more help is needed if retailers are to avoid the need for an insolvency lawyer. Director general at the organisation Stephen Robertson said some high streets "are in big trouble". He added: "Practical steps are needed to protect and promote our high streets so they remain attractive locations where businesses of all kinds can thrive. "A proactive approach to managing our town centres would benefit customers, communities, retailers and other businesses." It follows comments made by the Association of Business Recovery Professionals, R3, that the problems being faced by traditional stores run deep. R3 President Frances Coulson explained that the shift to buying goods online is one of the prime causes of the "high street blood bath".
