Company fined for exposing workers to asbestos

Workers at a South Yorkshire company could be seeking advice from an asbestosis lawyer after they were exposed to potentially deadly chemicals. Fosters of Thrybergh Ltd was fined after employees came into contact with materials containing asbestos, despite advice from the local council. It was only when a prohibition notice was served by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) that the workers were removed from danger. The case related to two warehouses which were run by storage firm Rotherham Bonding Company. It was using staff from its sister company, Fosters of Thrybergh, to remove stock from the sites before they were to be demolished by the local council. A survey revealed large amounts of damaged asbestos-containing materials on the floors where forklift trucks were operating. Although they were notified about the results, neither company took action to protect workers. Fosters of Thrybergh was fined £5,500 after pleading guilty to counts of asbestos breaches. HSE inspector Mark Welsh said: "This is a particularly shocking incident as not only did this firm not undertake an asbestos survey, they completely ignored the advice given by the council and a specialist surveyor." Asbestos-related diseases are thought to kill around 4,000 people every year in the UK. Posted by Paul Stevens
