BSI to help with Bribery Act compliance

Companies engaging corporate legal services to comply with tough new anti-corruption laws will get extra help from the British Standards Institute (BSI). The organisation has published a draft version of a new standard designed allow businesses to demonstrate their anti-bribery processes. It comes after the introduction of the Bribery Act on July 1st, which imposes strict new guidelines on what constitutes corruption. One of the main defences for companies is to show that they had adequate anti-corruption measures in place, which is where the new standard, BS 10500, comes in. In addition to legal firms, the BSI has cooperated with the City of London Police, the National Audit Office, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the Audit Commission on the standard.
Shirley Bailey-Wood, operations director of BSI Standards, said: "Responsible organisations increasingly see bribery prevention as on a par with safety and quality control.
"They want a means to demonstrate that they have an adequate system to prevent bribery taking place."
Justice secretary Kenneth Clarke has said that "honest" companies would not have to make any major changes to their procedures as a result of the Bribery Act.
