Southampton strike action to spread

Unions have warned that the six-week long strike action by Southampton City Council employees will spread further. Workers are relying on trade union support from Unite and Unison as they continue their action against the plans by the local authority to sack workers and re-engage them on inferior contracts. The unions had previously said that the council could see thousands of its workers seeking unfair dismissal compensation claim advice. On Monday (July 11th) Southampton port health officers will join the strike, as will fleet transport workers who are responsible for the council's refuse lorries, parks vans and other vehicles. The unions said the industrial action has the potential to bring one of the UK's busiest ports to a complete halt. Unite and Unison explained that the escalation of the strikes is the result of "frustration" caused by the council's "mishandling" of talks with mediation services body Acas. Ian Woodland, Unite regional officer, said: "There is absolutely no need for this city to force people onto lower wages - to do so is a malicious attempt to bully worried people into accepting any terms in order to hang onto their jobs."
