Demolition firm fined after ceiling collapses on worker

The potential risk of demolition workers needing a personal injury lawyer in Southampton has been highlighted by a case in which an employee was nearly killed when a ceiling collapsed on him. Self-employed labourer Daniel Cope was part of a team demolishing a building in Grimsby when the incident occurred in 2010. He was sent in by a site supervisor from H. Cope and Sons (Demolition) Ltd to remove asbestos debris to reduce the contamination of the rest of the rubble. After going into the building, the ceiling collapsed striking Mr Cope on the head. The accident resulted in a broken knee and he suffered severe bruising to his neck and shoulder. A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed the company knew the joists supporting the ceiling were rotten. Principal HSE inspector Dave Redman said Mr Cope was nearly killed in the incident. "There was a large dent and crack in Daniel's hard hat afterwards - a stark indication of how close he came to severe injury," he added. Magistrates fined H. Cope and Sons (Demolition) Ltd £7,500 and ordered the company to pay £5,000 towards costs. It comes after new figures show that there has been a rise in the number of workplace fatalities in the UK over the last year. Posted by Paul Stevens
