Minister calls for 'mates mortgages'

Housing minister Grant Shapps is calling on lenders to offer so-called "mates mortgages" in an attempt to boost the residential property conveyancing sector and help young people to buy homes.
He wants banks to offer more deals that allow groups of friends to club together to pay for a mortgage.
It comes as new government research shows that 86 per cent of people want to enter the residential property conveyancing market and buy their own home.
Friends "who are perfectly capable of paying monthly mortgage payments but are struggling to fund a deposit on their own", should have options open to them to get their feet on the property ladder, Mr Shapps said.
In addition to calling on banks to deliver more innovative mortgage products, the government has recently announced a number of schemes to aid first-time buyers.
Chancellor George Osborne unveiled a new FirstBuy scheme to help homebuyers with their deposits.
Meanwhile, the government also wants to make it easier to convert redundant commercial property into new homes.
