Mediation services 'should always be considered'

Mediation services should always be considered as an alternative in private client and commercial dispute resolution, it has been claimed.
Brian Speers, president of the Law Society in Northern Ireland, said it was important for people to always explore the possibility of mediation.
In an interview with the Belfast Telegraph, he argued that mediation services could be used to good effect in succession disagreements in private firms, inheritance claims and shareholder disputes.
He explained that mediation centres on making a distinction between the rights and interests of clients.
"Often rights don't chime with interests. Particularly by looking at the interests rather than the rights, you expand the opportunities for much more positive solution," Mr Speers told the newspaper.
His comments come as the government in Westminster is trying to promote more alternative forms of dispute resolution.
Greater use of mediation services in cases involving children is a key element of the Family Justice Review.
In its submission to the review, the Law Society of England and Wales said that while they can play a part, there will always be disputes where a court is needed to find a solution.
Rick Munro, accredited mediator with Lamport Bassitt, said: "Mediation is more flexible, quicker and more cost effective than the courts and is more suitable to resolve the vast majority of disputes."
