Safety charity dismayed by workplace accident figures

A leading safety charity has expressed concern about new figures showing the number of workplace fatalities has risen in the last year.
Following a record low, figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show a rise of 24 fatalities, from 147 in 2009/10 to 171 in 2010/11.
The statistics emerge at a time when the government is attempting to change health and safety laws, which could affect workers looking for a personal injury lawyer in Southampton.
Roger Bibbings, occupations safety advisor at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, described the rising death toll as "disappointing".
He suggested that cuts to the HSE's budget, which accompany the legislative reform, are "extremely worrying".
Fatal injuries are "the tip of a much larger iceberg", he added, noting that "at least twice as many workers are killed on the roads while driving as part of their job".
Mr Bibbings also stressed that asbestos remains a major killer, which could mean there is no drop in the number of workers seeking advice from an asbestosis lawyer.
