Workplace fatality rise 'shocking', says Unite

New figures indicating more people could be seeking a personal injury lawyer in Southampton represent a "shocking change" that shows the government is on the wrong track with health and safety legislation, a leading union has claimed. Unite said the recent rise in the number of people killed at work should "shock some sense into the government" about its attempt to reduce health and safety regulations. New statistics show that 171 people were killed while at work in 2010/11, a 16 per cent increase on the previous year. The union described as "insulting" and a "sham" the plans to reduce the burden on businesses by removing rules relating to workplace safety. Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said health and safety rules "are not burdensome bureaucracy but essential protections". He strongly criticised the Red Tape Challenge, which is inviting views from companies on legislation that they feel is unnecessary. "It is not an appropriate way to determine government policy on health and safety at work - and it is an insult to workers everywhere, particularly those who have been injured themselves or for those families who have lost a loved one," Mr McCluskey said.
