Unemployment increases divorce risk for men

Rising unemployment levels could see more men seek advice on family law, mediation and relationships. Being without a job makes men more likely to divorce their wives, researchers in the US have said. The study from Ohio State University also shows men who lose their jobs are more likely to be divorced by their partners. However, the effect of being unemployed seemed to have no effect on women's chances of divorce, the researchers said. It is thought that the difference can be explained by the fact that men are still viewed as the main breadwinner in a household, even though barriers to women being employed outside the home have weakened considerably. "Women's employment has increased and is accepted, men's non-employment is unacceptable to many, and there is a cultural ambivalence and lack of institutional support for men taking on feminised roles such as household work and emotional support," said the authors of the study, which is published in the American Journal of Sociology. It comes as the government is looking at divorce law as part of a wide-ranging review of family law, mediation and relationships. Posted by Paul Stevens
