Minister signals relaxation on empty property planning laws

More people could be seeking property investment advice from a commercial property solicitor to take advantage of proposed changes to the law on empty buildings. Planning minister Greg Clark has indicated that he wants to remove barriers to businesses and communities wanting to temporarily change the use of empty properties. He said the government may scrap red tape to encourage so-called "meanwhile uses" of empty buildings to boost town centres. The reforms would form part of a wider shake-up of the used class orders system. "We want to make it easier for businesses and community enterprises to reanimate vacant spaces, helping to revive struggling high streets and kick-start local growth," the minister said.
Eddie Bridgeman from the social enterprise Meanwhile Space, which brings empty spaces back into use, welcomed the proposals.
"This could give a big boost to getting business and community enterprises into empty premises," he said.
The announcement comes as the government plans to shake up planning laws through the localism bill, which is aimed at giving greater say to communities in the planning process.
