Red Tape Challenge focuses on health and safety law

Legislation affecting people seeking advice from a workplace personal injury lawyer in Southampton is the subject of the government's Red Tape Challenge. The consultation process, which is calling for views on what unnecessary laws should be scrapped to reduce the burden on businesses, is turning its focus to health and safety law. It comes as the government has already announced a raft of reforms to workplace safety laws, which could see the number of inspections cut by around a third. The Red Tape Challenge could take this even further by removing yet more barriers to business compliance with the law. Commenting earlier in the year, Prime Minister David Cameron said: "There are over 21,000 statutory rules and regulations in force, and I want us to bring that number – and the burden it represents – down." Meanwhile, a study from the British Chambers of Commerce indicated that companies are struggling with the level of red tape. The organisation found that 47 per cent of businesses feel that health and safety regulations are a burden. Consultation on health and safety law as part of the Red Tap Challenge will run from June 30th to July 21st. Posted by Georgina Price
