Unite condemns Southampton council for 'divisive and misleading' approach

Workers at Southampton City Council can continue to count on trade union support after Unite accused the local authority's leaders of attempting to "divide and mislead" the workforce. The union described a move by the council to claim that lower paid workers earning under £22,000 a year would be exempt from the upcoming pay cut as "underhand". Up to 2,500 employees could seek unfair dismissal compensation claim advice over the council's plans to re-engage workers on inferior contracts from July 11th, Unite said. In an open letter to the local authority, Unite and Unison expressed "extreme disappointment" at the outcome of talks facilitated by the conciliatory and mediation services body Acas. The two unions also reiterated their calls for the July 11th deadline to be dropped to allow talks to operate without the "looming threat" of sackings. Mark Wood, Unite convenor, said: "We have had three days of Acas talks with Southampton management now. At no point during these long hours have they given the impression that they are serious about solving this dispute through negotiated means." Strike action by waste disposal workers remains ongoing while the two sides attempt to negotiate. Posted by Georgina Price
