Asbestos concerns as managing agents fail on safety checks

Millions of people living in blocks of flats could be seeking advice from an asbestosis lawyer as a new report claims managing agents are failing to carry out basic safety checks.

The study from property agents Urban Owners showed that over 81 per cent of blocks of flats did not have the relevant asbestos certificate.

Concerns were also raised about managing agents failing to carry out fire, electrical and health and safety checks.

The report authors stressed that the failure to carry out these risk assessments could have important legal implications for directors of any Right To Manage, Share of Freehold or Residents Management Committee.

Steve Wylie, director at Urban Owners, said: "The lax attitude of many managing agents towards safety is unacceptable. Unprofessional firms are routinely neglecting their legal responsibilities."

There are an estimated 1.8 million leasehold properties in the UK, according to data from the Association of Residential Managing Agents.
