Law Society backs family justice reforms

Reforms of the system for family law, mediation and relationships have received the backing of the Law Society.
The organisation said it supports the "far-reaching" changes being proposed by the government to the family justice system.
Linda Lee, president of the Law Society, said the proposals are "ambitious" and warned that "half-measures will not succeed".
She called for significant financial investment to back up the reforms and criticised the government for axing legal aid budgets at the same time as proposing great changes.
The society is behind the majority of the plans, though it expressed doubt over the proposals for charging fees, and said it is opposed to enforcing contact orders through the suspension of the payment of maintenance.
It also urged the review to recommend to the government a so-called no-fault divorce system.
Ms Lee noted that the drive for greater application of mediation services in family cases could be beneficial, but stressed that there will always be instances where courts have to step in.
The consultation on family justice closed yesterday (June 23rd) and the publication of its findings are due in the autumn.
