A new scheme for women from ethnic minorities could see more people seek an employment discrimination claim solicitor with trade union support. Unite has launched its Black Women's Network, which is to look into the problems of discrimination in recruitment, pay, progression and family-friendly policies faced by this group of the UK population. The latest Labour Force Survey statistics reveals that the employment rate of ethnic minority women is 52 per cent, compared with 72 per cent for the working population as a whole. It also shows that the unemployment rate for men and women from ethnic minorities stands at 13 per cent, compared to eight per cent overall. Women from ethnic minorities are more likely to economically inactive than the rest of the population - 39.2 per cent against 21.1 per cent. Unite national officer for equalities Collette Cork-Hurst said: "Black women workers continue to face discrimination in the workplace due to race and gender." She added: "The aim is to increase the involvement and participation of Unite black women in our union and to take action in addressing specific issues for black women workers."
