Competition Commission back govt on mergers and acquisitions reform

Proposals to create a single regulatory body for cases where a mergers and acquisitions solicitor service is involved have received backing from one of the bodies concerned. The Competition Commission (CC) says it supports the government's plans to merge it with the competition functions of the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to form a single Competition Markets Authority (CMA). In its submission to the consultation on the proposed reforms, the CC said this would ensure resources are used more effectively and reduce the burden on businesses. CC Chairman Roger Witcomb explained that competition authorities have a job to support economic growth and productivity by "delivering fair, robust decisions in a reasonable timescale". He continued: "The creation of a new single authority offers the opportunity to achieve this task even more successfully by building on and extending the acknowledged strengths of the existing regime." The CBI also supports the creation of the CMA, which it said would increase efficiency and reduce duplication. It also called for the deregulation of mergers where the target company has a turnover of less than £5 million. Posted by Georgina Price
