HMRC outlines inheritance tax proposals

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has set out how changes to wills and inheritance tax planning will look. It has launched a consultation on the chancellor's proposals to introduce a four per cent inheritance tax break to people leaving ten per cent of their estate to charity. The plans are designed to encourage more people to leave money to charitable causes, or increase the amount they already intend to bequeath.
Justine Greening, economic secretary to the Treasury, said: "The government's philanthropy package announced at this year's Budget represented the most radical reforms to charitable giving for more than twenty years and is designed to encourage further financial support for charities."
Inheritance tax is normally due at 40 per cent above the nil-rate band. The 36 per cent rate will apply to estates that include charitable legacies of at least ten per cent of the value of the net estate. A study from Standard Life earlier this year showed that 71 per cent of the UK population said they would not leave money to charities in their wills. Posted by Alex McLean
