Southampton council workers enter 2nd phase of strikes

Refuse collectors in Southampton have begun their second phase of strike action as council leaders remain "clueless" about to how to resolve the dispute. Unite, the union leading the campaign along with Unison, said support is growing for the industrial action, which was sparked by the council's decision to sack thousands of employees and re-engage them on poorer contracts. Unite regional officer Ian Woodland made it clear that council leader Royston Smith needs to sit down with unions and workers to resolve the situation, such as by using an employment contract law service or mediation services. "If Councillor Smith genuinely wants to bring peace to this city he should fly back from his holidays and sit down with the workers and their unions," he said. "Royston Smith and his team seem either clueless as to how or unconcerned about solving this dispute," Mr Woodland added. A poll in Southampton's Daily Echo reveals that 69 per cent of the city's people support the workers in their fight, with only 31 per cent backing the council. On Monday (June 13th) around 500 council workers, their families and supporters will march through the city in protest. Posted by Paul Stevens
