Unite campaign tackles behavioural safety measures

Behavioural safety measures are not the answer for businesses looking to avoid an accident at work solicitor brining injury claims on behalf of employees, according to the union Unite. It has launched a campaign warning members in the paper and corrugated packaging sector about the dangers of these types of safety initiatives. Behavioural safety relates to management programmes that focus on the actions of workers to reduce accidents. Proponents of these schemes believe that between 80 and 100 per cent of accidents are caused by unsafe acts by workers. Peter Ellis, Unite national officer for the paper and corrugating industries, said: "Too many employers are introducing behavioural safety schemes thinking they are the answer to everything on health and safety. They cost a lot of money and they don't work." Unite said it opposes any scheme that seeks to "blame the worker", noting that the main cause of injury and illness in the workplace is the management of health and safety by bosses. The union has also voiced grave concerns about government attempts to reduce the number of workplace safety visits by a third. Posted by Georgina Price
