M25 worker death leads to prosecutions

Two companies have been fined after a worker was killed on the M25, employees looking for an accident at work solicitor have learned.
Christopher Lewis was carrying out fencing work close to the Holmesdale Tunnel section of the M25 near Enfield in 2004 when he was crushed between a van and a safety barrier after a lorry jack-knifed on the motorway.
At Southwark Crown Court, construction firm Carillion Highway Maintenance Limited and a subcontractor, Traffic Management (North East) Limited, were fined a total of £202,000 after a case was brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
HSE principal inspector Andy Beal said that while the lorry driver, who had previously been convicted of driving without due care and attention, was not without blame, the two companies failed to do enough to protect workers that night.
"Speed limits were too high, there was a poor cone layout through the contraflow and there was inadequate management of subcontractors," he added.
"Had both firms met their legal responsibilities, this collision could have been avoided."
