UK acquisitions abroad increase

More UK companies could have been using a mergers and acquisitions solicitor service in 2011.
New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal that the value of acquisitions abroad by UK companies rose to £18.3 billion in the first three months of 2011 from £3.8 billion in the last quarter of 2010.
This is the highest reported value for outward investment since the final three months of 2007, according to the ONS.
Expenditure on acquisitions in the UK by foreign companies fell to £6.4 billion in Q1 2011 from £7 billion the previous quarter.
The amount spent on acquisitions in the UK by British firms was £1.2 billion in the first three months of the year, marking a fall from £6.3 billion in Q4 2010.
It comes after the business secretary, Vince Cable, suggested that there are too many acquisitions being allowed to go ahead.
Speaking to the GMB conference, he said: "I have made it clear – post Cadbury – that there have to be changes and I am pleased to see the Takeover Panel has come up with modest but useful changes to reduce unnecessary takeovers."
