Refurbishment company fined for asbestos exposures

Two employees at a refurbishment firm could be seeking an asbestosis lawyer after they were exposed to asbestos.
John Todd Ltd, of Middletown, Powys, was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive after the workers were exposed to the substance at a site in Oswestry.
The company was commissioned to refurbish a building, but when licensed asbestos contractors arrived they found that the two self-employed workers and company director John Todd had already started to remove the material.
The company had taken no precautions to prevent the spread of fibres, Shrewsbury Magistrates' Court heard.
John Todd Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety laws and was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £10,000 in costs.
The HSE said the company "showed an absolute disregard for the health and safety of workers".
"It is well known throughout industry that exposure to asbestos fibres can cause premature death, yet this company chose to expose its workers to this risk," explained HSE inspector Nic Rigby.
An estimated 4,000 people a year die from asbestos exposure, making it the biggest single cause of work-related deaths in the UK.
