Separating couples fighting over pets

Pets are increasingly taking centre stage in cases involving family law, mediation and relationships. A fifth of separating couples with pets have fought over the custody of the animal, according to research from the Co-operative Insurance. One in ten of these pet owners have even used professional mediation services to reconcile their differences. In over half of the cases (56 per cent), both parties wanted to keep the pet, while one in ten revolved around neither party wanting the animal. Lee Mooney from the Co-operative Insurance said: "For many couples, the family pet is treated as an additional member of the family and as such custody battles are now starting to mirror the ones that couples go through when they are deciding custody of their children with lawyers and mediators becoming involved."
He added that "pet pre-nups" could be drawn up in future between couples before they buy a pet or move in together.
It comes after High Court judge Sir Paul Coleridge described current divorce laws as outdated and "not fit for purpose".
