Unite issues warning to Southampton City Council over industrial action

Unite is urging Southampton City Council to "get serious" with an employment contract law service to sort out an ongoing dispute with workers. The union is accusing the local authority of not being serious about resolving the industrial action by council workers. It stems from the council's decision to sack over 4,000 employees and re-engage them on poorer contracts. Refuse collectors started the campaign of strikes, which is now spreading to include traffic wardens and maintenance workers. Unite's leader Len McCluskey is addressing hundreds of council workers in Southampton today (June 2nd), praising them for their actions. He said: "When will employers realise that macho management does not work? You cannot tell workers that they must accept serious attacks on their wages or be sacked and not expect them to defend themselves." "Negotiation, not intimidation, is the only way to solve this dispute," he added. Unite, with support from Unison, wants the council leader Royston Smith to start negotiations immediately, instead of delaying talks until July 6th, which is just five days before the planned dismissal date.
