Contractor prosecuted for exposing workers to asbestos

A contractor has been prosecuted after workers were exposed to asbestos at a demolition site in Derby. In a case that highlights why many people have turned to an asbestosis lawyer recently, 47-year-old Wayne Priestley was ordered to carry out 300 hours of community service after pleading guilty to numerous breaches of regulations regarding the safe handling of the material. He had been employed to remove asbestos-containing materials from the former Allens Printers building in Webster Street ahead of its demolition. Quarnmill Construction Ltd, which has already been prosecuted for its health and safety failings in this case, provided Mr Priestly with a survey detailing the location of the asbestos. Mr Priestley, of The Beeches, Lincoln Road, Tuxford, Nottinghamshire, assured Quarnmill that he was able to remove the asbestos, despite having no licence to do so. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed widespread failures to mitigate potential asbestos exposure. HSE inspector Carol Southerd said: "Asbestos is the single greatest cause of work-related deaths in the UK. Employers need to protect their workers now to prevent them contracting an asbestos-related disease in the future." The HSE has led a campaign to highlight the hidden dangers of asbestos, which it estimates kills 4,000 people every year. Posted by Paul Stevens
