Music industry 'must pay better attention to noise risk guidance'

The music and entertainment industry could find itself at the brunt end of a claim by a personal injury lawyer in Southampton, if noise risk warnings remain unheeded.
There needs to be better awareness of the health and safety issues surrounding noise across the music industry, according to Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
Some 21,000 people a year are thought to experience work-related hearing problems.
As part of Noise Action Week, the organisation is urging those in the industry to pay closer attention to guidance and advice.
Peter Wilson is an IOSH course trainer that offers tips on reducing noise risk and warns that severe tinnitus is a very definite problem across the industry.
"People think that earplugs ruin the quality of the music they hear," he explained. "This is wrong, and it actually makes it easier for you to hear people who are talking to you while music is playing. It's also a myth that louder is best, as our ears actually become numb to certain levels of sound."
