Businesses 'slow to respond' to AWR employment regulations

A high proportion of firms could find themselves seeking unfair dismissal compensation claim advice because they have failed to properly consider the impact of Agency Worker Regulations (AWR) on their business.
Although awareness of AWR has improved, only ten per cent of employers are planning to make any specific changes ahead of the October implementation deadline, according to the REC JobsOutlook survey.
This is despite 77 per cent of employers planning to increase or maintain their use of agency workers over this period.
However, the lack of action may be because companies and organisations have yet to decide how to respond, perhaps because they are in consultation with a firm offering an employment law solicitor service.
REC head of policy Gillian Econopouly explained: "Recent employer workshops have seen more businesses focusing on getting best value from the flexible workforce - rather than simply seeing it as a cost to be managed.
"There is also an employer brand issue at play when considering how to implement the regulations."
Finances continue to put pressure on companies to change their employment practices.
Public sector cutbacks and marginal growth among private firms has had a noticeable impact on the ability of employers to reward workers, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
