Builder fined after worker falls through roof

A builder has been fined after an employee fell more than three metres through a garage roof.

Anthony Murphy, 53, fell through the fragile roof while working for contractor Hugh Pattison at a block of garages in Knotts Yard, Whitstable, Kent.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted Mr Pattison, 44, for inadequate planning, which led to the accident.

It follows a drive by the HSE to highlight the danger of operating at height and the possibility of it leading to an accident at work solicitor being drafted in.

According to the HSE, falls from height continue to be the biggest killer on construction sites.

Mr Murphy suffered two broken ribs and a fractured sternum in the fall. The HSE said he also suffered life-threatening internal injuries and broke several bones in his back.

Mr Pattison of Ripley Road, Willesborough, Ashford, Kent pleaded guilty to breaching workplace safety laws and was fined £800 at Canterbury Magistrates' Court.

After the hearing Mr Murphy said: "I find it very difficult to stand for any more than about five minutes and can only walk about 25 metres with assistance."
