Southampton council workers strike with trade union support

Refuse workers in Southampton have begun a week's worth of strikes with trade union support.
Council workers began the action after seeking employment contract law advice from the union Unite.
The strikes are in protest against plans by the city council to dismiss thousands of workers and re-employ them on "substantially" worse terms and conditions.
Unite said 108 refuse collectors would take full strike action from May 23rd to May 27th.
The union's assistant general secretary, Gail Cartmail, said: "The tactic being deployed by Southampton City Council is possible because UK employment law reinforces the medieval master-servant principle that has no place in the 21st century."
Mark Wood, Unite convenor at Southampton City Council, said: "Council employees have been given no option but to take this action by an unreasonable employer more intent on breaking their will than working together."
