Maidenhead chemical firm fined for solvent waste spill

A Maidenhead-based chemical company has been fined £150,000 following a major commercial litigation and dispute resolution case.
Solvent Resource Management Ltd was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after a large amount of waste solvents and water was released into the environment at its chemical plant in Rye, East Sussex.
Brighton Crown Court heard how over 400 tonnes of solvent and contaminated waste was released into the surrounding area when a steel tank collapsed.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service placed a 300-metre cordon around the site for two days, following the incident in 2009.
A HSE investigation, with the help of the Environment Agency, found Solvent Resource Management Ltd had failed to manage the examination and inspection of the tanks at the site.
HSE inspector Trevor Jones said: "If the company had put in place suitable and effective measures to manage the tank inspection programme, according to its contents and use, then this incident would have been prevented."
Solvent Resource Management Ltd of Hanson House, Castle Hill, Maidenhead, Berkshire, pleaded guilty to Regulation 4 of the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999.
