Paper firm fined after worker suffers hand injuries in accident at work

A paper firm has been fined £15,000 after a worker suffered severe and permanent hand injuries, people looking for an accident at work solicitor have learned. David Millband, 46, was seriously injured last year when his right hand was caught in a reel-fed machine at The Crimped Paper Works Limited on Bowden Lane, Chapel-en-le-Frith. Buxton Magistrates Court was told that he lost three fingers, partially severed his thumb, suffered injuries to his little finger and had to undergo two operations. Fiona Coffey, from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), said the accident was "entirely preventable". "The company had a legal duty to prevent access to the dangerous parts of their machinery, but provided engineers with keys which could override the interlocks," she added. She noted that a similar incident five months beforehand had resulted in a new system for the interlocks being purchased, but this was not made operational in time for the second accident. Meanwhile, a separate HSE prosecution has resulted in a £150,000 fine for chemical company Solvent Resource Management after an industrial accident in Rye, West Sussex. Posted by Paul Stevens
