Event launched to highlight asbestos risks

A new event for workers in building trades could see a reduction in the asbestos compensation claim rate in the UK. Training courses are being offered to improve asbestos awareness by the South Yorkshire & Humber Working Well Together Group, which is a partnership between the construction sector and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). A total of eight sessions will be run over the next month that are aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. It is estimated that around 4,000 people die in the UK from asbestos-related conditions, according to the HSE. HSE principal inspector David Redman explained that the potentially lethal material can be present in any building built before 2000. "Asbestos surveys should be carried out before work starts on a construction or demolition project and workers told where asbestos could be found and what should be done if it is discovered accidentally," he said. It follows an HSE tour of the north-west of England that sought to make construction workers more aware of workplace hazards including asbestos. Posted by Georgina Price
