Company fined after worker is trapped by stone slabs

A granite business and one of its directors could face a workplace accident compensation claim after a worker was trapped by a two-and-a-half tonne pack of slabs. City of London Magistrates heard how the man, who did not wish to be named, was unloading pallets from a truck when the slabs pinned him. M & R Granite & Marble Ltd and company director Monzer Mahmoud Alrayes were each fined £5,000 for their part in the 2010 accident. Injuries to the man's chest and left arm required a number of operations, as well as months of therapy and rehabilitation. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) told the court that the firm had failed to ensure the man was not exposed to the risk of falling stone slabs during handling operations.
HSE inspector Saif Deen said: "The risks of handling stone slabs and loading or unloading operations from containerised lorries are well known as both the HSE and industry have highlighted."
It comes as the HSE announces a safety event taking place next week that could cut the personal injury claim rate in the construction sector in the Highlands. Posted by Georgina Price
