Secrecy imposed on £57m divorce case

A judge has imposed a secrecy order on a divorce case in which a husband's appeal for an £18 million settlement was turned down. The ruling was made to protect the identities of the couple's three children, aged between nine and 16. In an unusual case in family law, mediation and relationships, it emerged in court that the Israeli couple were multi-millionaires despite living in a semi-detached home and sending their children to state schools. The wife had inherited a £57 million fortune from her scientist grandfather when she was just 15. Her husband asked for £18 million to set up home in Regent's Park, but this was turned down by three Court of Appeal judges. They instead said that a £5 million settlement was sufficient for his needs. Lord Justice Wilson noted that the details of the case were extremely unusual.
"Throughout the marriage neither party generated any earned income. They had no need to," he said.
It comes as the Commons Justice Committee is carrying out an inquiry into the administration of the family justice system and reporting restrictions in cases involving children.
