Deaf people 'face unfair discrimination at work'

People who suffer hearing problems may not only be able to seek industrial deafness compensation advice, but also look for an employment discrimination claim solicitor.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing people face discrimination when looking for work, according to Dr Hilary Jones, GP and medical broadcaster.

One in five adults in the UK has hearing problems, he explained, adding that this is set to rise to around one in three by 2025.

He said these people are "discriminated against unfairly, particularly if they are very deaf".

"But even for people with hearing problems they might be stigmatised if they are seen wearing a hearing aid," Dr Jones added.

The Health and Safety Executive has a range of resources available to those who think they could suffer work-related hearing damage.

It explains that employers have a legal obligation to assess the levels of noise workers and are exposed to and take any necessary measures to limit this to reasonable levels.
