Intern wins employment tribunal pay fight

A union is warning businesses that it will seek the help of an employment discrimination claim solicitor if interns are not paid. The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) issued the claim after one of its members won an employment tribunal case over pay. Keri Hudson worked as an intern at the My Village website, which is run by TPG Web Publishing Ltd. Despite taking on a number of responsibilities during her time there, the company refused to pay her because she was an intern. However, the tribunal ruled that despite not having a written contract, the 21-year-old was a worker in law and therefore entitled to the National Minimum Wage and holiday pay. NUJ legal officer Roy Mincoff said: "This sends a clear message to media companies that if they treat interns like cheap labour, the NUJ will take you through the courts. "If in reality interns are workers, they are entitled to National Minimum Wage and holiday pay and NUJ will fight for these rights to be enforced". Research published earlier this year by Internocracy revealed that just 12 per cent of top, senior and middle managers realise that unpaid placements may be illegal. Posted by Alex McLean
