HSE safety tours targets asbestos

A new safety tour could reduce the asbestos compensation claim rate among construction workers. Asbestos exposure is one of the key topics being covered in a two-week tour of construction sites and colleges in the north-west of England. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which is behind the initiative, is hopeful that the tour will lead to fewer workplace accidents and other industrial diseases. Falls from height will also be looked at, after six workers were killed in the region in 2009/10. Polly Tomlinson, HSE principal inspector for construction, said: "The latest figures show that 545 workers in the north-west suffered major injuries as a result of falls last year. "We'll also be highlighting the dangers of prolonged use of power tools, and dusts including asbestos." Asbestos remains the UK's "biggest workplace killer”, according to HSE, which has led a campaign to highlight the dangers of the material. Posted by Georgina Price
