Govt unveils 'radical' reforms to parental leave

"Radical" reforms to the way people work may require parents to seek an employment law solicitor service. A new system of flexible parental leave will be introduced by 2015, under plans announced by the government today (May 16th). Ministers say the current system is "too rigid" and "outdated", and say they want to give parents and employers greater flexibility. Under the proposals, once the early weeks of maternity and paternity leave have ended, parents will be able to share the overall leave allowance between them. Businesses will have the ability to ensure that the leave must be taken in one continuous period if an agreement cannot be reached. Announcing the plans, business secretary Vince Cable said: "These measures are fairer for fathers and maintain the existing entitlements for mothers – but crucially give parents much greater choice over how to balance their work and family commitments." The news follows the decision to review a number of employment laws that the government believes are hindering economic growth. Unions, including the TUC and Unite, criticised the proposals as stripping away key workers' rights. Posted by Alex McLean
