Businesses 'must have voice in planning system'

Amendments to new legislation that will affect issues such as contaminated land and planning have been welcomed by the British Property Federation (BPF).

Changes to the localism bill mean businesses with links to an area can sit on Neighbourhood Forums - local groups tasked with drawing up planning documents for their community.

The BPF stressed that it is essential for businesses to have a "voice" in the planning process.

It has been campaigning for some time to give the business community a bigger say in developing planning rules.

BPF chief executive Liz Peace said: "We have been hugely impressed with the willingness of ministers to engage on this issue, and we are delighted that they have listened to the concerns that have been put forward by the business community."

The Federation of Small Businesses, which has also been calling for local firms to sit on the forums, noted that these companies will be "key strengthening the economic recovery".
