Asbestos exposure leads to fine for Nottinghamshire building firm

A building firm in Nottinghamshire could face an asbestos compensation claim after pleading guilty to mishandling the material.
Abbott and Mason Building and Joinery Contractors Ltd of Mansfield was fined £20,000 following the incident last year in which the possessions of an elderly client were contaminated with asbestos as a result of bathroom renovation work.
Nottingham Magistrates' Court also heard how the firm left materials containing asbestos lying around outside the home of 96-year-old Mrs Ann Jenkins, in West Bridgford.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) told the court that the firm was aware the materials contained asbestos but failed to deal it safely and correctly.
HSE inspector Frances Bailey commented: "This company showed a wilful disregard for the health and safety of its employees and the public.
"Abbott and Mason knew the panels contained asbestos and should have dealt with it safely."
The HSE has been fighting a long-running battle against asbestos and its exposure to tradesmen.
Its Hidden Killer campaign has raised awareness about the effects of the substance and has been recognised by the European Excellence Awards.
