HSE unveils new online accident reporting system

Fatal and major incidents that could lead to a workplace accident compensation claim can still be reported to authorities by phone, it has been confirmed.
From September 12th 2011, all other reported work-related injuries under RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) will move to a mainly online system, under plans announced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) today (May 10th).
HSE director of strategy Trevor Carlile explained that the proportion of incidents reported online has been increasing over the last seven years.
Online reporting allows the agency to more efficient in the way it handles accidents at work, he added.
"We do recognise, however, that people reporting a traumatic event still need that personal interaction so the notification of fatal and major incidents and injuries will still take place by phone," Mr Carlile said.
The development comes as the HSE faces a cut to its budget of around a third over the next four years.
In addition, the government plans to refocus the agency's priority to more high risk industries and reduce the number of automatic workplace inspections.
