North Sea workers not at higher risk of injury in GB sector, claims HSE

Offshore oil and gas workers in the British sector of the North Sea are not at a higher risk of death or serious injury, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has claimed.

It follows a recent report in the Sunday Telegraph that suggested the workplace accident compensation claim rate in the UK sector could be higher than in the Norwegian area.

In a letter to the newspaper, the HSE described the report as "misleading" and said there was "no significant difference" in the fatal and serious accident rate in the two sectors.

HSE deputy chief executive Kevin Myers explained that both the British and Norwegian sectors have improved safety records in recent years.

However, there is "no room for complacency", he added, noting that the oil and gas sector is a "high hazard" industry.

The letter comes after the Commons Energy and Climate Change Select Committee concluded in a recent report that the UK safety regime is superior to that governing the Deepwater Horizon, which exploded last year in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mr Myers continued: "There is always work for the industry and regulators to do to ensure standards are maintained and when appropriate continually improved."

The Sunday Telegraph cited evidence from Petroleum Safety Authority's Trends in Risk Level report, which showed there were four deaths in the British sector of the North Sea in the five years to April 2010, compared to two in the Norwegian zone.
