Engineering firm fined for forklift injury

A metal engineering company may face a workplace accident compensation claim after a worker suffered serious injuries when a forklift truck tipped over.
Metaltech Precision Ltd, based at Chard Junction in Dorset, was fined £5,000 after it pleaded guilty to health and safety breaches that led to the accident in 2009.
Yeovil Magistrates Court heard how Mark Connett, 36, was guiding the forklift at the company's Yonder Hill premises when the vehicle tipped and the load landed on him.
He suffered serious fractures to the knee and ankle of his left leg, which had to be pinned.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that the load was being moved using an extension built in-house and that there was a lack of adequate training provided to employees.
After the hearing, HSE inspector Kate Leftly explained: "The load Mr Connett and his colleagues were working with was large and heavy, but despite this, the lifting operation was not properly controlled and there was no planned safe system of work."
Earlier this month, Buckinghamshire-based Morgans Plant Hire was fined £50,000 after a worker was killed when the forklift truck he was driving overturned.
